Biden Administration Goal of 50% of All New Cars Sold to Be Zero-Emissions (EVs)

According to Axios, President Joe Biden has announced an ambitious goal with the major automakers to have nearly 50% of all new cars sold in the US be a zero-emission vehicles.

“An executive order that sets a non-binding goal of 50% of all new cars sold in 2030 to be zero-emissions models, including electric and hydrogen fuel cell models. The same order will instruct agencies to set binding emissions and efficiency rules beyond the mid-2020s for light-duty vehicles, but also medium- and heavy-duty vehicles like semi-trucks.”

More than 50% of North Carolina revenues for transportation infrastructure comes from the Gas Tax. EV vehicle owners do not pay any towards the Gas tax. With more EVs on the road, the Gas Tax will become more unstable and unreliable. Simply put, North Carolina will have less money to repair and invest in our roads and bridges.

To ensure everyone pays their fair share, we must modernize the revenue model with a more sustainable and diversified revenue stream. North Carolina must have the resource to maintain and invest in our roads and bridges from an economic and citizen safety standpoint.
