Fair Share or Funding Crisis?

We’re not crazy.

That infrastructure funding crisis we keep warning about? The one where North Carolina’s primary road and bridge funding source, the gas tax, is paying for less and less of the infrastructure we need because so many people are transitioning to electric and hybrid vehicles that don’t pay their fair share.

It’s real. And it’s getting worse. Here’s some more proof:

Recently published vehicle registration statistics from the North Carolina Department of Transportation show that electric and hybrid vehicles are becoming increasingly popular. As predicted, this rapid change is starving North Carolina’s ability to invest in and maintain our transportation network.

We can’t wait. The North Carolina General Assembly should take the opportunity to ensure that electric and hybrid vehicles are paying their fair share for our roads.
