Federal Dollars Not Enough. Billions In Backlog. We Must Modernize.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has a backlog of nearly $8 billion in our State Transportation Improvement Program. This situation started before COVID, but the impacts of the pandemic – worker shortage, inflation of materials and goods, increased gas prices, etc. – are adding to the problem.

The Raleigh News & Observer has an article on the topic.

The N.C. Department of Transportation expects to receive about $2 billion in new federal money over the next five years as a result of the big infrastructure bill Congress passed last fall. But it won’t be enough to prevent NCDOT from having to delay numerous construction projects in the coming decade.

North Carolina is a rapidly growing state and very attractive to businesses and citizens. Our economic success will continue to create significant pressure on our existing transportation network. To address our state’s growing needs, we need a modern transportation revenue system to generate the resources to maintain and invest in our transportation infrastructure.

We encourage legislators to enact fair and equitable solutions to help our state continue to grow.
