Interstate 40 West near Statesville, NC is closed for repairs “after a gaping hole emerged in the travel lanes on Friday,” according to a (Raleigh) News & Observer report.
A large chunk of concrete was found dangling from the bridge, creating a dangerous situation prompting NC DOT officials to close the bridge for immediate repairs. We are thankful that no one was injured. However, this situation is a real reminder of the need to modernize our state’s transportation revenues to enhance our ability to maintain and invest in North Carolina’s transportation infrastructure. We encourage our state elected officials to enact solutions to modernize our system.
We have previously outlined a report that shows that 5,680 bridges in North Carolina need repair.
