More fatal traffic crashes than ever before

The number of North Carolinians killed in traffic crashes rose in 2021 and the number of fatalities is the highest level since 1971, according to this new report from the News & Observer.

“Highway deaths have risen 45% since 2011, to 1,755 last year. That’s the most in a single year since 1973, when the death toll reached 1,892, according to data compiled by the N.C. Department of Transportation.”

TRIP released a report that shows that “inadequate state and local funding, more than one-third of major roads and highway in North Carolina are in poor or mediocre condition – approximately 8,400 miles. Driving on rough roads costs the average North Carolina driver $500 annually in additional vehicle operating – a total of $3.8 billion statewide.”

Our roads are dangerous. It’s time to change that.
